How can CAMPaM benefit our department’s pastoral care services?

As your service becomes increasingly significant to the interdisciplinary team, your positive rating jumps with the administration. Your chaplain’s energy level becomes higher and stronger and performance levels will increase. These greatly needed self-care methods are built within the department so they may be utilized by chaplains and brought to other staff so sorely in need of them.

CAMPaM studies will:

Increase department’s reputation Boost staff stamina and work morale Improve patient satisfaction Satisfy administration Increase demand for chaplains Create more chaplain jobs Increase budget and greater respect Solidify a chaplain’s position Lead to fearless and spirit-led ministry.

How can we find 32 hours in our busy schedule? It is a very scary thought to carve out 32 hours from our normal work schedule; a schedule in which a chaplain might have 50 to 100 patients in the census at one time. CAMPaM is planned in such a way that no department needs to take more than 8 hours (in one day, or two four hour days) in a three or six month period of time. I will work around your schedule to make it easy on you and your staff. Read the action plan for more details.

  • Do you have an action plan?

Yes. To make it as easy as possible on the departments, CAMPaM is divided into four modules. Each module is about 8 hours in length. In addition, there is an optional follow-up integration session. This is planned as a weekend retreat. In this retreat participants solidify the skills they have learned for self-care, personal development, spiritual empowerment, personal training and relaxation. This will also provide enough time for chaplains to review and reflect on their experiences and practice at work.

We are understaffed. Will it increase the work load of my chaplains?

It is true - most pastoral care departments are understaffed. This is the primary reason why CAMPaM may be helpful to your chaplains - it will give you some tools to focus your attention on your staff. A de-stressed staff will deliver better care and this will decrease patients’ anxiety and increase their satisfaction. In other words, your chaplains will become the source of strength for your hospital staff and reduce the tensions that will increase their productivity. Do the chaplains carry the burden of their staff or patients as a result of this? Absolutely not. CAMPaM teaches techniques to impart effective ministry in a short amount of time to your patients and staff.

By providing some chart writing terminology to the chaplains, your charting also will become more satisfactory to the interdisciplinary team. I also will provide suggestions to the department heads on how to integrate these into their existing computer charting system.

Depending on the department’s willingness to make changes to their methodology of charting, the time used for charting on the floor and in the department can be dramatically reduced.

Are there any hospitals that are applying this already?

    Yes. There are.

    What is their success rate?

The reception of the program in the hospitals that have implemented it has been extraordinary. When the program was started in one hospital, a chaplain was appointed on a part time basis to minister to 2 floors. Now, within 9 months of application of the principles of CAMPaM, the ministry has been expanded to 12 floors and is moving into another hospital of the same system.

What was the response from the staff chaplains?

Here are some of the answers tabulated from a questionnaire given to chaplains who had studied CAMPaM.

  • Were classes useful? Very 100%

  • Will you use it? Yes 100%

  • Was it practical? Yes 99%

  • Easy learning? Yes 100%

  • Use with staff? Yes 96%

  • Enough time to Practice? Yes 84%

  • Want to study more? Yes 100%

Can we contact a director who has implemented this study?

Yes. You may. Information given upon request.

Can this be integrated into a CPE program?

Very much so. This program is designed in such a way that it can be easily integrated into the CPE schedule. Each module can be presented as a one or two day didactic to the CPE students at your center. Presenting this in four modules will give each CPE student enough time to practice and benefit from it. As stated, the follow-up session is presented as a weekend retreat that will energize the student and give them a chance to experience relaxation, fun and a different learning environment.

Would this study take the focus away from CPE?

CAMPaM is a study that enhances the focus on CPE rather than detracting from it. It provides a practical perspective to CPE making it, in effect, more tangible. This will improve the CPE model, serving to make it an even more comprehensive system that employs the gifts of nature to supplement, not to substitute, our great ministry.

How did this study meet national standards and outcomes?

This program does meet the national and international standards of professional organizations such as NACC, ACPE, APC, AAPC, CAPPE, CPSP, etc.

Can my chaplains count CAMPaM Studies towards Board Certified Chaplain CEUs? Yes they can. This program was submitted to the Association of Professional Chaplains for approval and the program was approved for 32 hours of Continuing Chaplaincy Education. I am presently working on increasing this to 50 contact hours making it a complete package for chaplains who are seeking 5 CCEs (50 contact hours of continuing education)

How affordable is this study for our eternally ailing departmental budget?

Recognizing the already low budget our departments have, this program is priced reasonably. It is very negotiable and affordable.

What do you teach in a CAMPaM session?

The full program includes information on a variety of alternative healing modalities. The outline of the program is approximately 20 pages as it was prepared to meet the national and international standards of professional organizations for chaplains and would even meet the standards of national and international associations of nurses, social workers, therapists and psychologists. Following is a preview into what perspectives and practical tools a chaplain would learn in these studies: Rituals, Imageries, Relaxation techniques, Prayer, Spiritual Energy, mindfulness, awareness, awakening, intuitiveness, hands on healing, inner healing therapies, creative therapies, spiritual touch, etc.

How is CAMPaM different from other CAM approaches?

The thrust of CAMPaM is to integrate the benefits of CAM into Pastoral Ministry as the gifts manifested in CAM are completely congruent with Pastoral Ministry. CAMPaM empowers chaplains to deliver services to their clients through an integrated approach, an approach which is the whole thrust of Clinical Pastoral Education and Pastoral Ministry. CAMPaM helps eliminate the dualism that separates humans into body and spirit. CAMPaM provides tools to make ministry real in mind, body and spirit as it addresses physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual experience. Thus CAMPaM is a model for an integrated approach to delivery of care, a pioneering model for the 3rd millennium healthcare professionals

Today’s fast growing and changing society is moving towards a more integrated approach to healthcare. The face of healthcare is changing and Complementary Alternative Medicine (CAM) is gaining prominence. As a result, the healthcare industries are inviting the practitioners of complementary alternative modalities of healing into mainstream healthcare practices. Recognizing this growing interest in CAM, the National Institute Of Health (NIH) is funding research programs in some of the most controversial but beneficial fields of complementary healing. 80+ Medical schools, including Harvard, and 100+ nursing schools across the nation have introduced Spirituality and Complementary Alternative Medicine as part of their curriculum for their students. Following this lead there are hospitals and clinics all across the nation providing CAM to their patients and families as a way of incorporating and moving along with the present worldview. Interestingly there are also insurance agencies, which cover the cost of such CAM treatments as massage therapy, music therapy, art therapy, energy work, etc.

Many medical professionals consider Professional Chaplaincy as a CAM modality that will enable faster integral healing. However, according to some medical professionals, it would sometimes seem that professional chaplains are not yet fully equipped to talk yet in the language of CAM. This is true even though no one can deny that the elements of CAM already practiced by chaplains are carried out with integrity, spiritual maturity and consistency, as guided by established professional associations.

Methods such as Rituals, Imageries, Relaxation techniques, Prayer, Spiritual Energy, Mindfulness, Awareness, Awakening, Intuitiveness, Hands on Healing, Inner Healing Therapies, Creative Therapies, Spiritual Touch, etc., are the rightful properties of chaplains, pastors and ministers but for now are claimed by others and ironically feared by ministers. Perhaps this fear comes from a lack of proper scriptural exploration of these themes.

CAMPaM™ is a program designed to reclaim our skills and gifts as seen in the context of complementary alternative medicine. This is possible only if we recognize these skills and gifts and understand how they can be manifested in our ministry even when we are unaware of them. And this is precisely where the significance of CAMPaM™ comes. CAMPaM™ is a theoretical and practical study of Complementary Alternative Methods of Healing in conjunction with Pastoral Ministry in keeping with national standards of professionalism and continuing education.
